Generally caused by tooth decay or shock, pulp or nerve tissue damage can be an excruciating experience, with symptoms including pain while chewing, sensitivity and swelling. If left untreated, pulp damage can lead to abscesses, or pus-filled infections, and eventually to tooth loss.
However, many times the problem can be very mild with just a mild discomfort and a mushy feeling. This is because the pressure is draining out of a hole in the tooth or a hole in the bone. Because there is no pressure build up, the tooth will not hurt but will feel “funny” or “mushy”. Other times a tooth may just be in the first stages of dying and so pain may only occur intermittently when biting or chewing. In both cases an X-ray will show the problem- and we use digital x-rays which are much safer and easier for you see the problem.
Endodontics, or root canal therapy, provides pain relief and is the branch of dentistry that deals with treating dental pulp damage – it is the best way to quickly address the pain and save the tooth. During a root canal procedure, infected nerve tissue is cleaned out and replaced with filler to prevent further infection. With proper anesthesia, root canal therapy can be a pain free process.
Dr. Hofmann has had 37 years of experience in root canal therapy and will take every measure to ensure our patients’ maximum comfort throughout the procedure. If you are experiencing tooth pain, sensitivity or swelling, it is important to act fast, not only to relieve your pain, but also to save the tooth from complete decay.
